One common reason is to preserve the tip of your ground Tungsten electrode.

There are many ways to ensure a great quality weld, truncating the tip is one way. You truncate the tip to alleviate the Tungsten electrode from very stressful situations. These situations include high amperage welding and AC welding e.g., aluminum. Worst-case scenario is that these situations can cause the tip to melt off and fall into your weld pool or to “ball up”.

In Inelco Grinders’ technical paper, you can read more in detail about the importance of truncating the tip and why this means you can improve your weld, ensure a more stable arc and at the end of the day by preserving the tip you can experience cost savings on Tungsten electrodes.

Enjoy the reading!
